Danakil Depression

After arriving in Semera by flight from Addis Ababa, the trip begins with a drive into the Afar lowlands. The road leads through volcanic terrain and arid desert landscapes until reaching the shores of Lake Afdera. Here, travelers can enjoy views of the mineral-rich salt lake and observe traditional salt extraction activities around the area. The journey then continues toward Hamed Ela, a small Afar settlement located in the heart of the salt desert. Once settled in the hut or camping area, the afternoon is spent exploring the vast salt flats surrounding the village. The day ends with a spectacular sunset reflecting across the white salt fields before dinner and overnight in Hamed Ela.

The second day is dedicated to exploring the Dallol region. The tour begins with a drive across the salt desert, followed by a guided walk through Dallol’s extraordinary hydrothermal formations. Travelers witness bright yellow sulfur fields, colorful acidic pools, mineral terraces, and unusual volcanic textures found nowhere else on Earth. After exploring Dallol, the journey continues to the traditional Afar salt mines, where workers extract salt blocks and load them onto camel caravans for transport. The experience includes seeing how the salt is cut, shaped, and prepared for long journeys across the desert. The tour also visits nearby salt mountains and deep salt canyons formed by centuries of mineral movement. Lunch is taken back in Hamed Ela, after which the group continues the journey toward Afdera side for rest. Overnight accommodation is arranged either in Hamed Ela or near Afdera, depending on your tour preference.

After breakfast, the return journey begins with a drive back to Semera. The road passes through desert plains, small Afar villages, and volcanic cones that mark the unique landscape of the region. Upon reaching Semera, the tour concludes with a return flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of the Danakil Depression adventure.
