Arrive in Addis Ababa, the bustling capital of Ethiopia. On this day, you will Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia to see the famous fossil “Lucy” and other ancient artifacts. Explore the Holy Trinity Cathedral, an important Ethiopian Orthodox church. Enjoy panoramic views of the city from Mount Entoto. Overnight is in Addis Ababa.

Travel to Bahir Dar, located on the shores of Lake Tana. Here, you will take a boat tour to explore the ancient island monasteries decorated with centuries-old religious paintings and manuscripts and visit the spectacular Blue Nile Falls, one of Ethiopia’s most famous natural attractions.

Drive to the historic imperial city of Gonder. You will explore Fasil Ghebbi, the royal castle complex, and visit Debre Berhan Selassie Church, known for its beautifully painted ceilings.

Drive to Debark, the gateway to Simien Mountains National Park. Here, you can enjoy scenic mountain views, dramatic cliffs, and valleys, and spot wildlife such as gelada baboons and Ethiopian ibex. Overnight is in Debark.

Travel north to Axum, the ancient kingdom that was once the center of the powerful Axumite civilization. You will visit the famous Obelisks of Axum, explore the Church of St. Mary of Zion, see the Queen of Sheba’s Palace ruins, and visit the Axum Archaeological Museum to learn about ancient artifacts and history. Spend another day in Axum to explore more of its historical treasures. You will revisit any sites you may have missed and enjoy local markets and interact with the local community. Overnight is in Axum.

Drive to Hawzien in the scenic Gheralta Mountains. You will hike to the remarkable rock-hewn churches perched on cliffs and admire the stunning landscapes of northern Tigray.

Travel to Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region. You will explore the local markets and cultural sites and experience daily life in the city.

Fly or drive to Lalibela, Ethiopia’s spiritual heart, famous for its rock-hewn churches. You will begin exploring the iconic churches, including Bete Giyorgis, the cross-shaped church carved into rock, and learn about the town’s medieval Christian history.

Spend a full day in Lalibela visiting more of its sacred sites. You will explore surrounding rock-hewn churches and monasteries and interact with local priests to learn about the town’s spiritual traditions.
